UP Movement – Ecosystems for Holistic Transformation in Africa
The UP Movement is a Christian movement connecting people, organizations, businesses, churches and leaders across sectors to catalyse locally led, holistic transformation across Africa.
UP does not present itself as another organization bringing a single solution to Africa. Instead, it provides a framework for building ecosystems in which existing people, organizations, resources, expertise and opportunities are connected and aligned so that they can achieve more together than any one organization could achieve alone.
Connect – Align – Enable
The UP Movement describes its role through three key functions:
-
- Connect – bring the right people and organizations into relationship with one another.
-
- Align – bring geographically based and sector-based leaders around a shared framework and direction.
-
- Enable – move from relationships and agreement toward coordinated, measurable transformation on the ground.
The result is an ecosystem of synergistic organizations working together while each partner continues to contribute its own calling, expertise, resources and strengths.
Transformation from the Individual to the Continent
UP works with a model in which transformation grows from the inside out:
-
- Individual – helping people grow spiritually, physically, emotionally, mentally and professionally.
-
- Community – families, churches, businesses and other groups developing greater unity, trust and collaboration.
-
- Hub – a geographic ecosystem where leaders and organizations from different sectors work together.
-
- Nation – multiple transformation hubs helping catalyse broader national change.
-
- Continent – proven models and ecosystems multiplying across African nations.
Transformation Hubs
A central part of the UP strategy is the development of Transformation Hubs. A Hub is approximately a 150 km transformation zone – large enough to engage multiple sectors of society and significant economic activity, yet local enough for genuine relationships, leadership and ownership.
A Hub brings together leaders, churches, organizations, businesses, investors and initiatives that are called to the same geographic area. Instead of each organization working independently, the Hub helps them understand how their different contributions can form part of a larger ecosystem for community transformation.
The goal is for successful Hubs to become replicable units of transformation that can multiply into other regions and contribute to national change.
Key Sectors
UP currently brings together several strategic sectors that contribute to holistic transformation:
-
- Agriculture – productive land stewardship, food security, regenerative agriculture, value chains, farmer empowerment, livelihoods and market access.
-
- Next Generation – education, character formation, spiritual maturity, practical skills, vocational readiness and developing resilient future leaders.
-
- Finance – faithful stewardship, savings, capital formation, enterprise development, household resilience and sustainable economic growth.
-
- Healthy Roots – servant leadership, living faith, dignity, ownership, healthy individuals, strong relationships, generosity and collaborating communities.
Additional organizations and expertise can connect into the ecosystem according to the needs and opportunities of each Hub and community.
Faith as a Foundation
UP understands spiritual transformation as foundational to holistic transformation. Faith is not simply treated as one isolated sector alongside agriculture, finance or education. Biblical identity, purpose, values, servant leadership, stewardship and generosity are intended to influence the entire ecosystem.
Churches therefore have an important role within local transformation. They can help strengthen individuals, families and communities spiritually while collaborating with organizations working in economic, educational, agricultural, health and other areas of society.
Local Ownership
A central principle is that Africa’s transformation should not primarily be imposed from outside. UP seeks to identify and connect the people, abilities, resources, land, organizations and opportunities that God has already placed within communities and nations.
External partners, expertise and capital can contribute, but the model emphasizes local leadership, ownership and culturally appropriate implementation.
Collaboration Instead of Another Program
UP is particularly relevant for organizations that already have an effective ministry, business model, resource or area of expertise. Partners do not necessarily need to create something new or become part of one centralized organization.
Instead, they can bring their particular contribution into a larger ecosystem and collaborate with complementary partners working toward shared transformation outcomes.
